I grew up in Finland and we didn’t stay indoors during the winter. Our gym class included cross country skiing and outdoor ice skating. My children also play outside in the winter and I love that. But there is an aspect of the weather changing that makes me consider a move further south: getting Eve ready for school. Dystonia (involuntary movements), spasticity (tightness) and being a 5 year old make the simple act of putting on snow pants and coat a wrestling match. Each year I search for new, innovative products that consider a person using a wheelchair and their caregiver in their design and use. This year, we finally have winter gear that is easy to use and warm. Even better, I have found by far the most customer service oriented company in Koolway Sports.
I posted a video on Facebook of our Koolway coat and how easy it is to put on. The coat is warm with soft fleece lining and it keeps Eve warm and saves my back compared to putting on a regular coat. The zippers are heavy duty, high quality and I expect we can get several years of use out of one coat. Before the coat was sent, I had a fun facetime session with Jennifer and John aka Bosley and we measured Eve and her chair for best fit. It was a whole family affair!
Eve also has a lap blanket that attaches to her coat with a zipper. It keeps her legs warm and protected from the wind. No more wresting with snow pants and wondering if she is too hot or cold. With an easy zip, we can check her legs. This coat is such a relief for us as we want Eve to be a part of all family activities. We had a really cold Easter and she was able to go outside with us for all the fun activities.
