Adaptive bicycles are a great way for a child with mobility needs to play with others and strengthen their bodies. There are so many different types of bikes from hand operated to adaptive seating and even bikes that include a special seat to ride in. Because of the custom nature of adaptive bikes, they are expensive and financially out of reach of many families. Non-profit organizations have realized this need and want to help families enjoy bike rides together and find ways to stay active.
Please remember that funding isn’t always available and most organizations are volunteer staffed. Also see my Ultimate Guide to Grants and other Resources for funding for medical equipment, free summer camps and help with medical bills. Funding criteria can change at any time, so it’s best to contact an organization before taking the time of applying for a specific piece of equipment. Here are my 5 favorite organizations that work with children from all over United States and have been known to grant adaptive bicycles.
There are also many local organizations that you may find in your city or state. Feel free to add them in the comments if you would like to share. January is a great time to think about adaptive bicycles as the grant cycles can take a while. If you have received an adaptive bicycle in the past, I would love to hear about your experiences.
